  • Chapter 1: Yelling

If you're trying to stop yelling, what are some alternatives to use in the moment to manage yourself?

For me, I used to go to another room to calm myself down or recite "this is not about you, it's all about her" so that I wouldn't take her actions personally.

Walking away sometimes works. Sometimes I try my quiet voice to get their attention. Again, if I can remember to drop my other agenda (cooking, shopping, whatever) I find it easier to stay calm. It's two steps forward, one step back.. Sometimes one step forward, two steps back! The biggest thing for me is not to get caught up in my brain's interpretation that it's an emergency. It almost never is. I have to work hard to control my own fears about what their behaviour today means for their future. One day they will act more mature - today they are still just small children trying to learn..
