Featured family: Nebraska miracle
One morning in June, nearly three months before her
due date, Rita Brhel woke up in a pool of
blood at her home in northeast Nebraska. After a
scary two-hour ambulance ride and four days of
hospitalized bedrest, Rita gave birth to a 3 1/2-pound
baby girl.
Rachel was born with Respiratory Distress Syndrome
and suffered a number of other health conditions,
from apnea and advanced jaundice to retinopathy of
the eyes and heartbeat irregularities. She spent 50
days in the hospital, coming home three weeks before
her original due date. Today, Rachel is a very healthy,
happy 20-pounder with only a couple lasting effects
from her prematurity.
Rita and her husband, Mike, credit much of their
daughter's miraculous recovery to Attachment
Parenting. It began when they were introduced to
Kangaroo Care and pumping breastmilk in the
hospital. Once they were home, they fully embraced
Attachment Parenting and now enjoy an intense
emotional bond within the entire family.

The mission of Attachment Parenting International
(API) is to promote parenting practices that create
strong, healthy emotional bonds between children
and their parents. These practices nurture and fulfill
a child's need for trust, empathy and affection,
providing a lifelong foundation for healthy, enduring
relationships.
Through education, support, advocacy and
research, API seeks to strengthen families and
increase awareness of the importance of secure
attachment, ultimately helping to reduce or prevent
child abuse, behavioral disorders, criminal acts and
other serious social problems.
