Shout out to Dad for Father's Day!
Greetings!
What are you passionate about? I'm quite passionate about children and about helping parents have the resources and support they need to raise their children. I have been facilitating parenting classes for more than a decade, have written parenting curriculum, worked closely with parents through children's and teen programs, and of course studied, read and researched parenting issues.
The key take-home message I've received? Parents need and want help.

You know this, as many of you have been passionate about aiding and supporting families. Many of you have joined in the cause, alongside Barbara Nicholson and Lysa Parker, who saw a great need and began Attachment Parenting International 15 years ago. The critical need for the practice of the API Principles only grows with each year. Sometimes it's discouraging, and we might feel a little burned out, but it's just too soon with still much more to do and the price too high for us not to support parents in these challenging times.

The result of continuing our joint efforts to work with parents and children? Nothing less than world changing.

We hope to reinvigorate you or keep you energized by taking stock and noticing just how far we've come together in 15 years. Here are some of the ways we're celebrating and we hope you will join us as we:
Celebrate with us - and keep your stamina up for another 15 years!

Sincerely,
Samantha Gray

Raise your Hand against smacking
From The Council of Europe: "Corporal punishment of children is the most widespread form of violence against children and it violates children's rights. It is ineffective as a means of discipline, conveys the wrong message to children and may cause seriously physical and psychological harm. Despite this, between 60% and 90% of parents in most European countries approve this practice.
The Council of Europe is challenging corporal punishment by campaigning for the total abolition of this practice and by promoting positive, non-violent parenting in its 47 member states.
The campaign launch of "Raise your hand against smacking" on 15 June 2008 in Zagreb propelled corporal punishment into the public debate. In communication terms, the real challenge is to convince adults to step back and take a hard look at their own parenting practices and attitudes towards children. And as few politicians are willing to undertake legislative change without public support, the campaign targets both the general public and decision makers."
Good relationship with parents may prevent teen drinking problems
Teenagers who have a strong relationship with their parents may start drinking at a later age - which may, in turn, lessen their risk of developing alcohol problems, a new study suggests.
The findings, published in the May issue of the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, underscore the important role parents play in the risk of problem drinking.

Correction

API endeavors to share accurate parenting information with you and will issue corrections to clarify any misrepresentation or inaccuracies. In the May 2009 issue of API Links, universal preschool was inaccurately characterized as mandatory and, while that has been proposed in the past, is not part of the current bills and acts considered. The universal preschool programs currently proposed are all voluntary. We regret the misinformation.
