You've heard about resilience, but have you heard about PCEs?
Positive Childhood Experiences, or PCEs (pronounced "pieces") is a relatively new area of resilience research that's helping us to learn more about adult-child relationships and experiences that increase resilience.
The cornerstone of resilience, and PCEs, is that a child has at least one positive relationship with caregiving adults in their life.
You've noticed by now that this is right up our alley and all that we do is geared towards healthy parent-child relationships. It's no surprise that these are the relationships that lead to child resilience and lifelong health. We're pretty excited to have this new connection with PCEs and resilience research.
If you've heard of PCEs, you might also have heard of ACEs or Adverse Childhood Experiences. We've been learning over the last several years how pervasive ACEs are in the general population and how they're linked to poor adult physical health. The idea is that the higher the ACEs, the more likely a child is to grow up and experience poor health. The great news is that PCEs matters a lot and the more PCEs children have, the more healthy they are overall, even if they also have ACEs. Not only are PCEs health-giving, but they're especially health-giving when too few of us escape ACEs.
